Meet the hardworking people behind Grand Rapids Triathlon and the ones who make race day happen year after year. As we prepare for the debut (and hopefully last) edition of the Grand Rapids Virtual Triathlon 9.5 this June, we celebrate the people who volunteer their time and have made GR Tri one of the best triathlons in the state…. or we like to think in the world!

How you got involved with Grand Rapids Triathlon?
I work with the previous road closure champion and he handed the reins to me.
Have you ever raced Grand Rapids Triathlon?
I’ve raced this event in I think all but 1 year since 2012, it always has been one of my favorites, there’s lots going on and lots to be excited about.
Do you have a favorite memory at the event?
One year I placed 41st overall in the sprint, I was pretty proud of that.
Any race mishaps over the years you like to laugh at now?
Not that I can think of.
What do you love about triathlon?
The competition is great and the people are awesome. It gives me motivation to stay active.
What is your favorite thing about the GR Tri event?
The atmosphere, it’s very electric race morning. Even at 2:30am when I usually get on site there’s a lot of hustle and bustle.
Your perfect post-race meal?
Pizza, always.
Why should someone still do the Grand Rapids Virtual Triathlon 9.5?
I feel the race directors have done an amazing job throughout the years and have put a lot of work not only in to this event but making it accessible to everyone during this uncertain time. Doing the Virtual 9.5 shows support for the race crew, directors and everyone else involved while keeping the motivation to train.
