Meet the hardworking people behind Grand Rapids Triathlon and the ones who make race day happen year after year. As we prepare for the debut (and hopefully last) edition of the Grand Rapids Virtual Triathlon 9.5 this June, we celebrate the people who volunteer their time and have made GR Tri one of the best triathlons in the state…. or we like to think in the world!

Name: Amy Larson
Age: 35
Hometown: Grand Rapids, MI
Occupation: Communication Specialist at the Spectrum Health & Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital Foundation
Champion Position: Transition Set up and Tear Down (past 2yrs)

How did you get involved with the GR Tri:
I was taking a break from Triathlons to focus on Ultra Swimming but still wanted to be part of the Tri community so became a volunteer champion!

Have you ever raced the event?
Yes! I have done Sprint, Olympic, Half, and last year did the half swim.

Do you have a favorite memory at the event?
Crossing the finish line for my first Half and having my Tri to Finish teammates waiting along with my family.

Any race mishaps over the years you like to laugh at now?
I jumped off a boat to start a race (it was a swim), and my wetsuit got caught on a nail and ripped a massive hole in my suit.  Thankfully it was only a 5-mile-swim, but I just remember thinking the entire time it was going to slow me down, or I was going to freeze from the water…. yeah none of that happened and I finished just fine!

What do you love about triathlon?
The community.  Once you start racing you meet some of the most amazing people, and support system.  I have met some of my best friends from racing.

What is your favorite thing about the GR Tri event?
I love seeing so many people I know compete and being able to cheer along so many people, it’s such an amazing inspiring community!

Your perfect post-race meal?
Tacos and margaritas (it’s become a thing)

Why should someone still do the Grand Rapids Virtual Triathlon 9.5?
It is a great way to stay motivated and training.  Doing a virtual Tri is so much more unique then just going out for a run.  I am looking forward to my first swim/bike/run in over 2 years!
