Interview: Meet Angie O’Brien

Angie O’Brien – 3-Time Participant for the Grand Rapids Triathlon

Angie O’Brien is a mother of two, wife, and Physical Therapist for the Grand Rapids Public School’s Early Childhood department. But that is not all that defines Angie! She takes every chance she has to train for and race in triathlons.

Grand Rapids resident, three-time participant for the Grand Rapids Triathlon, and overall female winner of the Half Aqua Bike for the MI Titanium, Angie O’Brien is one motivated triathlete.

What addicted you to triathlons?

“It is funny that you phrase it that way, as that is exactly what it is, ADDICTING!”

Angie ran her first 5K in 2001, and since then she has participated in a few marathons. However, after running for a few years, she didn’t feel challenged any longer. Seeking advice from her friends, Angie decided to give it a tri at the Tri Del Sol in 2009. The rest is history, as she hopes to race in the Milwaukee Nationals this year.

What is one piece of advice to share with newbie triathletes?

“Listen to your body. Training and schedules are key and will keep your mind at ease the day of the race.”
