The Tris4Health Grand Rapids Triathlon is on schedule for its June 5 debut.

Plans for the USAT-sanctioned race, which includes Sprint, Olympic, and Half-Iron options, hit a snag in December when the Cascade Township Board tabled a request to approve road closures for the event.

At issue for the board were public safety and traffic impacts for residents. The event could attract over 900 participants and calls for closing portions of Thornapple River Drive on a Sunday morning.

Organizers came before the board again to present more information and specifics gained from meeting with local churches, the Kent County Road Commission, and the Kent County Sheriff’s Department.

Satisfied that traffic generated by the event could be managed by overtime deputies, which will be paid for the event organizers, the board voted unanimously Wednesday to allow the triathlon to move forward.
