General FAQs

Why was the event cancelled early?
We lost many nights of sleep wrestling with this decision, but things have reached a point where we can no longer guarantee the health and safety of our athletes or the community at large. There is no clear end to this crisis at this time including the relaxing of social distancing guidelines nor have we seen the peak of this current outbreak.

People will travel from 35+ states and several countries for Grand Rapids Triathlon.  We expected a record year with more than 2,000 athletes in attendance, 400+ volunteers, and thousands of spectators.   The multisport community is an amazing group of people and we doubt anyone would knowingly race while sick but given the incubation period of this disease it’s entirely possible, if not probable, that someone at the event would be contagious.  This would be made worse by how close triathletes are physically throughout the race (transition, swim start, etc). Many of us also live in areas that are subject to restrictions on travel, going outside, etc. which has severely limited your ability to train, with the swim being the biggest concern.

When do I need to decide on deferring to 2021?
Athletes have until April 30, 2020 to make the choice to defer their entry to 2021.

What happens after I go to my registration and select a deferral?
The IMAthlete system will email you a code that you will use to register for the 2021 Grand Rapids Triathlon when that registration opens (anticipating mid-June). You will use that code to register for your 2021 race. While their system may send a message indicating that your registration is not guaranteed a slot if we sell out or registration closes, however your spot in the 2021 race is guaranteed if you defer. You must register again for the 2021 event before we close registration race week, however there will be slots available for everyone deferring.

Why isn’t the race postponed until later in 2020?
We discussed this option, at length.  Unfortunately, many of the spring races in our area have already rescheduled for late summer or early fall, which significantly impacted the weekends available to us.  We realize that no one has a crystal ball, but we have yet to find an expert who has said that this pandemic will pass by a certain date. In order to avoid disappointing our athletes twice we have decided to postpone our 10th Anniversary celebration to 2021.

When will the 2021 Grand Rapids Triathlon take place?
Sunday June 13, 2021

What about the kids tri?
The kids tri has been postponed until 2021.  We will automatically defer these entries.

What about the insurance I purchased?
Unfortunately, the insurance company will not cover a lost entry due to pandemic.

What happens to my one day USAT membership?
If you choose to defer your one day membership will roll over to next year. We are working with USAT on how best to handle the one day fee for those who enter the virtual event.

What happens if I upgraded to a women’s tank?
Tanks will be produced for the virtual event.  If you choose to defer your tank upgrade will roll over to next year.

What happens to my prepaid photos?
We are still working on the details of this option as we have yet to finalize our photography options for 2021.  If we do not use FinisherPix your prepaid funds will be refunded.

What happens to my prepaid practice swim?
If you defer this will be rolled into 2021.  Refunds are available to those who race the virtual event.  Please contact us if you’d like to donate this fee to our charity partners.

What is a virtual event?
A virtual event is an opportunity for you to complete your registered event on your anytime between June 1st and June 30th.  We will mail out medals and shirts in early July.  You can learn more about the virtual race specifically at our virtual race FAQ below

How can I help?
The best thing our athletes can do is to simply be empathic and understanding of the situation.  This is unprecedented and everyone is struggling, both personally and professionally. If you can donate your entry, this will help ensuring we can help support our charity partners. Our online store is still open with kits and merchandise available for purchase.  We will be adding new items and offering older items at closeout pricing so keep an eye on our social media posts.

Do you have any experience with virtual events?
Tris4Health launched a series of virtual events at the start of this year and are excited to take what we have learned and apply it to our flagship event.  We believe that Grand Rapids Virtual Triathlon 9.5 will be one of the premier virtual events and hope that you will give us a chance to prove it.

Is this event timed?  If so, how does that work?
Yes, the event is timed.  We have been working with SportStats to create a virtual leaderboard.  You will need to submit your workout file through the SportStats website.  This will allow you to place and be eligible for awards. Instructions can be sent via email along with our social media channels when available.

Do I need to submit a time?
Nope.  If you aren’t interested in placing in your age group, you can simply submit your time manually through the SportStats website.

Will there be awards?
Yes!  Unfortunately, this is one of our sunk costs so they will have this year’s event date.

What else will I get with my virtual event?
Those who participate in our virtual event will receive in the mail a participant shirt, a finisher medal, a race bib, and any awards they may have won based on the times submitted from your workout file to SportStats. Those items will be mailed starting in July. You also get a FREE finish line virtual photo from FinisherPix as well as a custom recording by GRTri legendary announcer Larry Crabbe.
