Can I participate?
Absolutely! If you are in between the ages of 6-15 you are eligible to take part in the fun and exciting triathlon! Be prepared for a great experience, bring a positive attitude, and be ready to learn firsthand about multisport!
Registration for the Kids Triathlon is $35, however, if the parent of the child is registered for any distance at the 2018 Grand Rapids Triathlon on Sunday, June 10th that child is eligible for a 50% discount. Use the code GRTRIKID50 at checkout when registering the child. Simply click here and scroll down to the Kids Triathlon event. Online registration will close one week before the event. We will take race day registration.

Each athlete will need:
- Running Clothes, Socks, & Shoes
- Water Bottle for the transition area
At check-in, each participant will receive a swim cap and race number (with pins to attach to clothing).
Athletes should report to the pool area at least 15 minutes prior to their start time. There will be time trial starts, volunteers will call specific age groups to coral areas on the pool deck prior to start. Each swimmer will start individually with 5 to 10 seconds between each swimmer. Kids will be sharing lanes and there is a possibility of kids getting passed in their lane. The swim is a serpentine swim. To get a better understanding of what a serpentine swim is click here.
After the swim portion, athletes will head to the transition area where they will towel off and put on any clothing needed for the bike portion. Helmets must be worn with chin straps secured at any time the athlete is on their bike (whether the bike is in motion or not). Volunteers will help direct athletes to the “Bike Out” pat to begin their bike ride.
After the bike segment, athletes will head to the transition area to return their bikes and helmets, change into any clothes needed for the run and head out. Volunteers will help direct athletes to the “Run Out” path to begin the last leg of the race. A water station will be available for the athletes as they exit the transition area. All runners must display their race number on the front of their body — either pinned to their shirt, shorts or attached to a race belt.
Parents will only be allowed in the transition area during designated transition area times prior to the race start. Once the event begins, the transition area will be closed to all family and friends. Only athletes and volunteers will be allowed in the transition area during the event. Volunteers will be available to help tie shoes, assist athletes, and direct the kids where to go. Family and friends can connect with the athlete after they have crossed the finish line and received their medal.
YES – usually this event is strictly for fun and to acquaint kids with multisport events. This year however the event will be timed.
Every young triathlete will receive a finisher’s medal when they cross the finish line.
Yes, you may register on race day.
Most participants will want to have a towel and water bottle. All will need socks, shoes. Boys will want a shirt to put on after the swim and if girls want to wear shorts or a shirt over their swimsuits they should remember to bring those items. Volunteers will be available to assist athletes in transition with tying shoes or any other needs. Helmets are necessary and athletes will not be able to participate without them.
No flotation or propulsive devices of any kind may be used during the swim. There will be certified lifeguards on duty for the duration of the swim course.
No, the entire race will be held within the park.
Yes – there will be one aid station on the run and food at the finish line. We encourage athletes to bring a water bottle to keep in transition for after the swim.
Water and Gatorade. There will be fruit, cookies, and drinks at the finish line.
